How to Install Frameless Glass Fencing

Homeowners and commercial entities considering installation of frameless glass fencing might be curious about how difficult it is to install.

The answer is: it’s not difficult at all. Most skilled licensed contractors can do it. Installing frameless glass fencing does not require highly specialized tools, only those suited for the surface where the stainless steel clamps are to be placed, such as a core drill or hammer drill for working with concrete or tile.

Surface Mount Installation

Surface mount clamps are secured to ground using expansion anchors (for tile and concrete) or lag screws (for wood).

  1. Use a chalk line to mark the center of the fence.
  2. Use the clamp base plate as a template to mark the location of the mounting holes. Install the two outermost clamps first, then run a string line tightly between these clamps. This string line will ensure that the line of clamps—and therefore the line of glass panels—is straight.
  3. Install the interposing clamps along the string line, with the string centered in the clamp slots.
  4. Position dress rings to conceal the mounting hardware.
  5. Insert rubber spacers into the clamp slots.
  6. Place the glass panels into the slots, protected by the rubber spacers.
  7. Insert metal plate in between clamp slot and rubber spacer.
  8. Tighten the clamps with an allen wrench, taking care that the glass does not touch the metal.

Core Mount Installation

Installations with core mount clamps can be performed in two ways: (1) by drilling holes in an existing surface, such as concrete, and then securing the clamps in place with grout, or (2) by embedding the clamps in fresh concrete, as shown in our example.

  1. Use a chalk line to mark the center of the fence.
  2. Determine the clamp location based on the total length of the fence.
  3. Core drill holes for the clamps. Ensure no wiring or underground pipe will be affected.
  4. Set the two outermost clamps first, then run a string line tightly between these clamps. This string line will ensure that the line of clamps—and therefore the line of glass panels—is straight, and that the height of each clamp is set correctly.
  5. Install the interposing clamps along the string line with the string centered in the clamp slots. Grout or cement the clamps in place, making sure that they are properly aligned, perfectly vertical, and set at the correct height.
  6. Position dress rings to conceal the grout.
  7. Insert rubber spacers into the clamp slots.
  8. Place the glass panels into the slots, protected by the rubber spacers.
  9. Insert metal plate in between clamp slot and rubber spacer.
  10. Tighten the clamps with an allen wrench, taking care that the glass does not touch the metal.

Glass Gates

In both types of installations, gates can be mounted onto an adjacent glass panel or post, opening away from the pool area. The gates are designed to automatically close and latch. Gate hinges have adjustable oil-pressure valves to adjust closing speed.

Tips for Successful Installation

These procedures are intended to convey an overview of a frameless glass fencing installation project. Installers should pay close attention to the manufacturer’s installation guidelines.

  • Handle glass with utmost care and attention. Store and lift glass panels in upright positon, and in dry conditions.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
  • Use a level and timber wedges to make sure clamps are perfectly vertical.
  • Make sure the clamps are positioned in a straight line.
  • If the ground surface is dirt, grass, or pavers over compressed sand, a concrete footer will need to be poured for stability.
